It’s been a busy weekend on the greens of Taranaki, here’s the latest (remember, for up-to-date results, go to: Taranaki Events results for 2021-22)

Hamish Kape’s Paritutu team completed a memorable weekend by advancing to the semifinals of the men’s centre fours event at Tower on Sunday.
Playing with Kaylin Huwlyer, Nathan Goodin and Aidan Zittersteijn, Kape’s side accounted for two of the most successful skips in the history of Taranaki bowls, Bruce Phillips (Tower) and Craig De Faria (West End), during post section play in the South Taranaki Club-sponsored event.
Kape’s side edged Phillips 16-14 and then held off De Faria’s team, which has won the title three times in the previous seven seasons, 17-16. Kape led by three shots playing the last end and De Faria could only manage a brace.
While Zittersteijn’s bowling success, including the 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medal, has been well documented, and Kape, with two Taranaki titles, has been a rising performer in recent years, the semifinal appearance will be the first such outing in the province for the front two.
Goodin, who commenced his bowls at Rahotu, has shown plenty of ability, while Huwyler is a Wanganui under-eight-year representative.
In the semifinals, that will be played at Tower this Saturday, Kape’s team will meet Kevin Hills from the host club. The other semi is between John Garrud (West End) and Wayne Hawkes (Vogeltown).
Hills’ team of Kerry Mullan, Alistair Hurley and Max Sayer narrowly beat a fellow Tower team, skipped by Russell Hardy, 14-12 in one quarterfinal.
In the other quarterfinals, Garrud ousted John Sextus (Stratford-Avon) 21-3, while Hawkes defeated Gerry O’Sullivan (Inglewood) 20-14.
Garrud combines with Norm Broughton, Bruce Hall and Paul Darbyshire, and while the draw required them to play an extra match on Sunday, they were untroubled.
Hawkes’ quartet of Adyne Jack, Hohepa Murray and Kevan Sellers had plenty of reason to enjoy their semifinal qualification. After defeating Darren Goodin (Paritutu) 19-12 in the morning round, Hawkes, who individually produced some excellent shots, then accounted for O’Sullivan, having led by three shots playing the last end.
* Paritutu and West End, the last two winners of the division one women’s interclub title, are locked in a direct head-to-head clash for this season’s crown.
A combined six rounds were played at the New Plymouth and Stratford-Avon clubs over the weekend in the Vospers-sponsored event.
Paritutu have 29 match points, with West End on 28 and New Plymouth third on 16. The final three rounds will be held this coming Saturday at Paritutu.
While Paritutu does hold the lead, it is still to sit out its bye round. Briar Atkinson won five games from six in the singles, while the pair of Cathy Andrews and Heather Johns had five wins and one draw. Paritutu’s four of Barbara Batley, Barbara Harvey, Jackie Moeahu and Gale Fache won four.
West End won an impressive 14 games from 15, with Susan Cottam in the singles and the pair of Sue Winter and Janice Ropitini both unbeaten. The four of Margie Davis, Molly Nagle, Lauren Bright and Trish Howard won four out of five.
Meanwhile, Paritutu has wrapped up the women’s second division title with the last round not being required to be played. Paritutu finished with 26 points, followed by Tower (19) and West End (17).
The winning Paritutu team was Marlene Barrowman and Tina Atkinson-Watt (pairs), Marlene McArthur and Bridget Fletcher (2x4x2) and Amanda Crehan, Cheryll Sharrock, Gaye Holub and Gloria Shaw (fours).

The draws for Vospers women’s interclub and the South Taranaki Club men’s centre fours have been posted.

Women’s division one: Vospers women’s division one draw

Players in the women’s division one are asked to note:

  1. The Board resolved at its meeting on Tuesday that for the women’s division one event only (not the men who are still required to have eight per side), that because there is a bye, the bye club is required to provide four markers for that round. These need not be players in the team.
  2. Both of the greens used in the women’s division one are requested to be set out for seven rinks only (rink eight is not necessary). Rink 7 on green 1, and rink 1 on green 2, will both be available to the bye team for utilisation.

Women’s division two: Vospers women’s division two draw

Men’s centre fours: South Taranaki Club men’s centre fours draw

Results will be posted under the respective Mens and Womens tabs as they become available. All the events commence on October 30 and are scheduled to conclude on November 6.

Peter Scott remembered

Bowls Taranaki sadly advises that Peter Scott passed away on October 12. Peter had a long and successful career in bowls, both on and off the green, in his 40-plus years in the sport. He played in Taranaki, Wanganui, Wellington and Manawatu as a tough, tenacious competitor. He won centre titles in both Taranaki and Wanganui as well as featuring in the closing rounds of the Dominion on a number of occasions. He was a driving force behind Police bowls in NZ and served on both the Taranaki and Wanganui Executives. When he returned to his home province of Taranaki in mid-2019, he became Executive Officer for Bowls Taranaki, a role he regretfully was forced to retire from in mid-2020 with ill health. At the same time he was breathing new life into the Waimea club, which was a further illustration of Peter’s ability to branch together the traditions of the game, which he cared so deeply for, with an eye for innovation and the future. Thank you, Peter, and God speed to you Big Bird.

Under-eights selection on October 10

An exciting fresh initiative for the new bowls season has seen 36 players picked for a Taranaki eight-years-and-under selection event.

The competition, with 18 men and 18 women, will take place at the Stratford-Avon club on October 10, commencing at 9.30am.

Bowls Taranaki identified that while there has been an increase in junior (five years and under) competitions, there was currently nothing on the centre programme for those with eight years or fewer experience in the game.

That is despite the Revital Fertilisers Taranaki representative team involving two fixtures for those from the eight-years-and-under group.

Expressions of interest from clubs saw over 80 players put their hand up for the new event.

“Given that this is the first year of the competition we have limited it to 36. But we very much have an eye for the future and will be gathering feedback from the event,” Bowls Taranaki chairman Grant Hassall said.

The selected players are:

Men: Bruce Lilley (West End), Bruce Colgan (West End), Steve Temperton (West End), Evan Jones (Fitzroy), Simon Rowe (Fitzroy), Paddy Deegan (Opunake), Levi Davis (Opunake), Steve Sabine (Inglewood), Kerry Mullan (Tower), Mark Hawken (Tower), Doug Clark (Manaia), Robert Clark (Manaia), Sean Prinsloo (Hawera Park), Nigel Berry (Hawera Park), Luca Dobson (Hawera Park), Hohepa Murray (Vogeltown), Kurt Smith (Oakura), Mike Baldwin (Lepperton). If unavailable, contact Garry Murfitt on 022-598-1097.

Women: Judy Fox (Manaia), Denielle Scown (Manaia), Shelley Clark (Manaia), Rita Davey (Opunake), Julie Hemahema (Opunake), Angela Debique (Opunake), Karen Wallace (Opunake), Geneva Barnard (Tower), Gail Burrows (Inglewood), Gloria Wolfe (Waitara), Norma Jane (Waitara), Cheryll Sharrock (Paritutu), Shelley Baldwin (Lepperton), Tina Quilter (Lepperton), Anne Potaka (Lepperton), Judy Crawford (Fitzroy), Margaret Lister (West End), Debra Kalin (West End). If unavailable, contact Janice Ropitini on 027-449-0734.

Plural membership

All bowlers who belong to more than one club are asked to take note of the following rule involving the champion-of-champions. This was passed at the Bowls Taranaki Board meeting on 8 September and takes immediate effect:

“A player is permitted to enter a specific club championship (which leads onto a Taranaki champion-of-champions event) in only one club in any given season. For the avoidance of doubt, a player is permitted to play different disciplines in different clubs but once they commence a particular discipline in one club, they are not able to compete in that same discipline in any other club.

Example: Player X plays the fours in club A only. Player X cannot play the fours in any other club. However, they can play the other disciplines in any other club.”

It was agreed that this rule would prohibit players having two bites of the cherry. In no way does this prohibit players belonging to more than one club.

Programme 2021-22

Sadly, the rise in Covid-19 alert levels has delayed the arrival of our handbooks. We expect these to be here in the near future, though, with production expected to be completed under level three.

In the meantime, you can start planning for the new season by checking out the centre programme and the directory of club tournaments under the Programme page, or by clicking below:
