Davey and Deegan into semifinals of mixed pairs

Opunake’s Rita Davey and Paddy Deegan are through to the semifinals of the Taranaki mixed pairs after a nailbiting conclusion at Okato on Sunday evening.

The duo were locked in a tense encounter with West End’s Sue Winter and Steve Walker in the quarterfinals of the Cross Country Rentals-sponsored event.

The West End pair, who won the event two seasons ago and were runners-up last year, led 16-13 at the commencement of the penultimate end.

Davey and Deegan scored a three and then took a single on the last end to sneak through. It completed a great day’s play for the Opunake combination. In the previous round, they had ousted West End’s Craig De Faria and Paritutu’s Jackie Moeahu 12-9.

The event will be finalised this coming Saturday at Okato, with Davey and Deegan due to meet Paritutu’s Darren Goodin and Barbara Batley in the semifinals.

Goodin and Batley advanced through their quarterfinal 23-8 over clubmates Kevin and June Gledhill, who at least had the satisfaction of being the married couple to go the furthest.

But Goodin and Batley had to work overtime to win their second round match, 15-13, over the 2018 champions, Steve Sabine and Cindy Nicoll (Inglewood).

The other two semifinalists are Paritutu’s Don Christensen and Cheryll Sharrock and Hawera Park’s Kristin Stampa and West End’s Grant Hassall.

Playing at Oakura, Christensen and Sharrock were particularly impressive. They powered away to two massive wins in the opening rounds – 22-4 and 23-2 – before edging out Okato’s Val McEldowney and Hamish Kape 12-10 in a tight quarterfinal which featured a number of immaculate heads.

Stampa, too, was in excellent touch as she controlled her pair through to a 15-11 victory in the last eight over Paritutu’s Steve Cottam and Gloria Shaw, albeit aided with the rub of the green.

Qualifiers found in men’s interclub divisions one and two

The top four sides have been found in both the first and second divisions in the TCB Dentures-sponsored men’s interclub after play on Saturday.

In the first division, Paritutu and Inglewood emerged as the top two sides from the amber section, while Tower and West End achieved the same feat in the black section.

Paritutu finished with 25 points to head the amber group after it won five games from six on Saturday. It was a decisive 3-0 winner over Hawera Park, but received a sterner examination in the fifth round from Inglewood. While Paritutu were already assured of qualification heading into that contest, Inglewood needed some points to enable it to hold onto its second position.

Last season’s champion-of-champions pairs winners, Steve Sabine and Graham Reive, responded with a 20-13 win over John Zittersteijn and Darren Goodin, after the Inglewood duo had lost to Coastal in the morning. The singles game was a cliffhanger, with Aidan Zittersteijn grabbing a four and a two on the last two ends to pip Paul Howell 21-20. Hamish Kape’s four won 20-9.

Both New Plymouth and Coastal had chances to still qualify going into the last game, trailing Inglewood by three and four points respectively. Coastal took that fifth round contest 2-1, but that saw both sides eliminated. Inglewood concluded on 20 points, followed by Coastal (18) and New Plymouth (17).

Tower, with 24 points, topped the black section. West End, on 20, took the second position, ahead of Oakura (18) and Fitzroy (14).

In the morning clash between West End and Tower, the city club prevailed 2-1, after Dean Elgar trounced Kevin Hills 21-7. Craig De Faria took 10 shots over the final four ends to win the pairs 21-14 over Scott Roberts, although Mark Anderson’s four got one back for Tower with a 15-14 victory over Steve Walker. The final round was abridged in the pairs and fours disciplines, after Elgar (21-7) and Hills (21-2) powered away in their games.

The top four playoff will take place on December 19. At the same time, the second division will also be resolved, after those qualifiers were found on Saturday, too. Manaia and West End I sneaked through in a tight amber group – with Tower desperately unlucky to miss out on differential – while Waitara and Paritutu are the qualifiers in the black section.

The third division has one round remaining. Waitara I, on 22 points, holds the lead. However, it is Paritutu in pole position. It has 21 points, and with Waitara I having a bye in the last round – where no points will be awarded – it will need to win just one game from three to secure the title.

In the Bayleys Real Estate-sponsored junior interclub, three of the four qualifiers have been found so far: Opunake I, from the amber section, and Lepperton and Paritutu III, from the black section. One section play round remains, with the interest focusing on the last berth available in the amber group. While Opunake I is clear on 14, Waimea (12) holds onto second spot, ahead of New Plymouth (10) and Paritutu II (8). Waimea has a bye in the last round, meaning it cannot add to its tally, but both New Plymouth and Paritutu II will secure four points each should they win in the last round.

Cross Country Rentals-sponsored mixed pairs

The draw for the Cross Country Rentals-sponsored mixed pairs has been released. Section play is on November 27 at Oakura, Okato, Rahotu, Pihama and Manaia. Players competing at Oakura and Pihama are asked to take their own lunch, as it will not be available at purchase at these two clubs. Three games are scheduled for Saturday, with two wins required to make post section play on November 28, which will be held at Oakura and Okato. The finals will take place on December 4.

With our Covid-19 scare (hopefully) behind us, all interclub matches scheduled for last Sunday, November 14, will take place this Saturday, November 20.

For the avoidance of doubt, this means:

TCB Dentures-sponsored men’s division two: rounds 4 and 5 – pairs and 2x4x2 at New Plymouth, fours at Vogeltown. The top two sides from each section will advance to the finals day, which is now scheduled for December 19.

TCB Dentures-sponsored men’s division three: rounds 4, 5 and 6 – all at Stratford-Avon. A determination on where the seventh round will be played on December 19 will be made in due course.

Bayleys Real Estate-sponsored under fives: rounds 4, 5 and 6 – all at Paritutu C. The seventh round and finals, involving the top two sides from each section, will be played on December 19.

Urgent Covid-19 update

After careful consideration and analysis, the Board of Bowls Taranaki have this afternoon resolved that no centre events will take place in the province this weekend (November 13-14).

That follows the announcement last evening of six Covid-19 cases in Stratford and the further information released today of exposure sites in both Stratford and Hawera.

While the Board acknowledges that Taranaki remains under Alert Level two, and therefore bowls is still permitted to be played, it believes the resolution is overall in the best interests of all bowlers.

“We considered putting in various safety measures for the representative fixture with Wanganui, which was scheduled for tomorrow (November 13) at Tower, but the negatives – both actual and potential – associated with the game we believe outweigh the positives,” Chairman Grant Hassall said. “The cumulative health of all bowlers is paramount.”

The decision includes the representative fixture, the men’s Saturday Shield (scheduled also for November 13) and all interclub competitions, which were due to be held on Sunday, November 14.

The Wanganui fixture is considered a postponement at this stage. An alternative date will endeavoured to be secured, if possible, with Wanganui.

The Saturday Shield round is cancelled.

The interclub will continue on November 20 at the clubs originally scheduled to host on November 14, pending any further developments with Covid-19. Further announcements on this will take over the coming week.

The Board understands that this decision will disappoint and frustrate some bowlers but, overall, believe it is the most sensible determination.

Divisional interclub competitions

In an effort to keep all bowlers up-to-date with the latest divisional results, these will be published on this site – when received. These are located on the Interclub tabs, which is found under the Mens and Womens respective sections.

Howell and Bovey both unbeaten in opening interclub rounds

Two new names in Taranaki this season made perfect starts on the first day of the TCB Dentures men’s division one interclub at Paritutu on Sunday.

While Paul Howell, who commenced his bowls at Waikanae and developed into a highly competent competitor in Taupo, also won the lot playing singles for Inglewood.

Kapiti gold star holder Neil Bovey, who has moved to Hawera, joined the three Anderson brothers – Brendan, Grant and Mark – in securing three wins on the trot for Tower in the fours.

Tower, playing in the black section, put themselves in the ideal spot to secure a top two qualifying position for the finals scheduled for November 20. It won eight games from nine, with current Christmas pairs titleholders Mark Kuklinski and Scott Roberts also unbeaten.

West End, with Dean Elgar collecting a treble in the singles, lie second in the group on 14 ahead of Oakura (10).

Paritutu head the amber section on 15 points, followed by Inglewood (14) and Coastal (12).

Hamish Kape continued his run of wins, skipping the Paritutu four to three victories. He teamed with Adam Collins, who has joined from Oakura, and Rodger Hassall, while Allan Batley and Don Christensen shared the lead role.

Paddy Deegan won three in the singles for Coastal, which included a 21-20 nail-biter over Darren Goodin in the opening round.

Two pairs combinations finished with two wins and a draw – the Zittersteijns, John and Aidan, for Paritutu, and New Plymouth’s Laurence Hori and Noel Probyn, who has transferred from Fitzroy this season. The two teams drew 20-all in the third round.

Two further rounds will be played at Tower and Hawera Park this Sunday before the top-four playoffs.

Paritutu take both titles

There was double delight for Paritutu when it took out two big prizes in Taranaki bowls on Saturday. Its division one women’s side backed up the victory the club had secured the previous weekend in the second tier, by winning the interclub title on its home greens. And at the Tower club, Hamish Kape’s quartet of Kaylin Huwyler, Nathan Goodin and Aidan Zittersteijn won the men’s centre fours title.

Paritutu’s victory was a come-from-behind effort in the interclub. Defending champions, West End, headed into the ninth and last round with 36 match points, three clear of Paritutu. With the round-robin event pitching the two city clubs against each other in that last round, it meant a virtual final. However, Paritutu had the tougher proposition, needing to win two matches and draw the third game, as a minimum, to take the honours. In the singles, Briar Atkinson got Paritutu off to the perfect defeating Susan Cottam 21-10. It was Atkinson’s seventh triumph from eight games in the competition, while Cottam won six. Cathy Andrews and Heather Johns made it two when they inflicted the only defeat on Sue Winter and Janice Ropitini 20-13 in the pairs, a six late in the game sealing the result for Paritutu. Andrews and Johns finished with seven wins and one draw. That left the whole contest riding on the outcome of the fours, with the Gale Fache-skipped side of Barbara Batley, Barbara Harvey and Jackie Moeahu getting the nod 14-12 over Trish Howard’s team of Margie Davis, Molly Nagle and Lauren Bright. In a tight match, the scores were level playing the last end, with birthday girl Harvey drawing the jack and sticking with it. Both fours combinations recorded five wins during the event.

Kape’s victory in the South Taranaki Club-sponsored centre fours could herald a new era in the province, with the combined age of the four players just 91 years – easily a Taranaki record. The Paritutu side were too steady and consistent in the final beating Vogeltown’s Adyne Jack, Hohepa Murray, Kevan Sellers and skip Wayne Hawkes 19-10. Kape’s side scored three threes and a single from the opening six ends to take a 10-2 lead. While Hawkes’ side closed to within five shots on two occasions, the last at 13-8 after 12 ends, Paritutu ultimately put more bowls on the head to dominate the encounter. In the semifinals, Kape’s side were commanding 24-10 victors over Tower’s Kerry Mullan, Alistair Hurley, Max Sayer and Kevin Hills. Vogeltown escaped 18-17 over West End’s Norm Broughton, Bruce Hall, Paul Darbyshire and John Garrud. Trailing by six shots playing the penultimate head, Hawkes crucially converted a four-down to a score of five and then sneaked the necessary two points on the last to win.

It’s been a busy weekend on the greens of Taranaki, here’s the latest (remember, for up-to-date results, go to: Taranaki Events results for 2021-22)

Hamish Kape’s Paritutu team completed a memorable weekend by advancing to the semifinals of the men’s centre fours event at Tower on Sunday.
Playing with Kaylin Huwlyer, Nathan Goodin and Aidan Zittersteijn, Kape’s side accounted for two of the most successful skips in the history of Taranaki bowls, Bruce Phillips (Tower) and Craig De Faria (West End), during post section play in the South Taranaki Club-sponsored event.
Kape’s side edged Phillips 16-14 and then held off De Faria’s team, which has won the title three times in the previous seven seasons, 17-16. Kape led by three shots playing the last end and De Faria could only manage a brace.
While Zittersteijn’s bowling success, including the 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medal, has been well documented, and Kape, with two Taranaki titles, has been a rising performer in recent years, the semifinal appearance will be the first such outing in the province for the front two.
Goodin, who commenced his bowls at Rahotu, has shown plenty of ability, while Huwyler is a Wanganui under-eight-year representative.
In the semifinals, that will be played at Tower this Saturday, Kape’s team will meet Kevin Hills from the host club. The other semi is between John Garrud (West End) and Wayne Hawkes (Vogeltown).
Hills’ team of Kerry Mullan, Alistair Hurley and Max Sayer narrowly beat a fellow Tower team, skipped by Russell Hardy, 14-12 in one quarterfinal.
In the other quarterfinals, Garrud ousted John Sextus (Stratford-Avon) 21-3, while Hawkes defeated Gerry O’Sullivan (Inglewood) 20-14.
Garrud combines with Norm Broughton, Bruce Hall and Paul Darbyshire, and while the draw required them to play an extra match on Sunday, they were untroubled.
Hawkes’ quartet of Adyne Jack, Hohepa Murray and Kevan Sellers had plenty of reason to enjoy their semifinal qualification. After defeating Darren Goodin (Paritutu) 19-12 in the morning round, Hawkes, who individually produced some excellent shots, then accounted for O’Sullivan, having led by three shots playing the last end.
* Paritutu and West End, the last two winners of the division one women’s interclub title, are locked in a direct head-to-head clash for this season’s crown.
A combined six rounds were played at the New Plymouth and Stratford-Avon clubs over the weekend in the Vospers-sponsored event.
Paritutu have 29 match points, with West End on 28 and New Plymouth third on 16. The final three rounds will be held this coming Saturday at Paritutu.
While Paritutu does hold the lead, it is still to sit out its bye round. Briar Atkinson won five games from six in the singles, while the pair of Cathy Andrews and Heather Johns had five wins and one draw. Paritutu’s four of Barbara Batley, Barbara Harvey, Jackie Moeahu and Gale Fache won four.
West End won an impressive 14 games from 15, with Susan Cottam in the singles and the pair of Sue Winter and Janice Ropitini both unbeaten. The four of Margie Davis, Molly Nagle, Lauren Bright and Trish Howard won four out of five.
Meanwhile, Paritutu has wrapped up the women’s second division title with the last round not being required to be played. Paritutu finished with 26 points, followed by Tower (19) and West End (17).
The winning Paritutu team was Marlene Barrowman and Tina Atkinson-Watt (pairs), Marlene McArthur and Bridget Fletcher (2x4x2) and Amanda Crehan, Cheryll Sharrock, Gaye Holub and Gloria Shaw (fours).
