Two new names in Taranaki this season made perfect starts on the first day of the TCB Dentures men’s division one interclub at Paritutu on Sunday.
While Paul Howell, who commenced his bowls at Waikanae and developed into a highly competent competitor in Taupo, also won the lot playing singles for Inglewood.
Kapiti gold star holder Neil Bovey, who has moved to Hawera, joined the three Anderson brothers – Brendan, Grant and Mark – in securing three wins on the trot for Tower in the fours.
Tower, playing in the black section, put themselves in the ideal spot to secure a top two qualifying position for the finals scheduled for November 20. It won eight games from nine, with current Christmas pairs titleholders Mark Kuklinski and Scott Roberts also unbeaten.
West End, with Dean Elgar collecting a treble in the singles, lie second in the group on 14 ahead of Oakura (10).
Paritutu head the amber section on 15 points, followed by Inglewood (14) and Coastal (12).
Hamish Kape continued his run of wins, skipping the Paritutu four to three victories. He teamed with Adam Collins, who has joined from Oakura, and Rodger Hassall, while Allan Batley and Don Christensen shared the lead role.
Paddy Deegan won three in the singles for Coastal, which included a 21-20 nail-biter over Darren Goodin in the opening round.
Two pairs combinations finished with two wins and a draw – the Zittersteijns, John and Aidan, for Paritutu, and New Plymouth’s Laurence Hori and Noel Probyn, who has transferred from Fitzroy this season. The two teams drew 20-all in the third round.
Two further rounds will be played at Tower and Hawera Park this Sunday before the top-four playoffs.
